Is sitting on the floor better than sitting on Mat or a sofa?
I’ve been sitting on the floor exclusively now for a year, for everything - work, leisure, meals, writing, art, - everything. I love it and I would never go back.
I’ve always wanted to stay healthy, and I was intrigued by the Asian custom of sitting on the floor. The more I researched, the more I was drawn to it as a lifestyle. I became a minimalist about a year ago and I moved into a 1-room studio with only a futon, a lap desk, some foam floor tiles and a lot of plants. I laid the foam floor tiles out as flooring over my wood floor, and I sit on that - they provide a really important cushion from the hardwood floor, and warmth.
In the beginning, it took a little time to get used to sitting on the floor exclusively, but I got used to it quickly, and now I just live like this all the time. I think I digest my food better also, and I’ve heard people claim this.
I also believe that taking care of the body entirely - diet, exercise, good sleep - all help keep you strong and help to support each other and the floor sitting. I ride my bike at least 8 miles a day. I also lay my yoga mat out over the foam floor and take yoga breaks often. Like others have said here, switching positions is key, and getting up often, tossing in a few downward dogs and planks - that keeps things moving and flexible. And if you find yourself slumping, instantly change positions, engage your core and sit up straight again. Don’t slouch! This is an “active” seating posture. Just change it up often, and remind yourself that it’s so much healthier than a chair! Circulation in your legs, for one thing. Try it!!
