స్థలపురాణం:
పార్వతీ పరమేశ్వరులకు కుమారులైన బొజ్జ వినాయకుడు, చిన్న సుబ్రహ్మణ్యుడులో విఘ్నాలకు ఎవరిని అధిపతి చేయాలి అని ఆలోచనలో పడ్డారు. ఒకనాడు పార్వతీపరమేశ్వరులు తమ కుమారులను పిలిచి ఒక పరీక్షను నిర్వహిస్తారు. అదేమిటంటే.. ‘‘ఈ భోలోకం మొత్తం చుట్టి, అన్ని పుణ్యనదులలో స్నానం చేసి, ఆ క్షేత్రాలను దర్శించి ఎవరైతే ముందుగా వస్తారో వారిని విఘ్నాలకు అధిపతి చేస్తాం’’ అని శంకరుడు చెబుతాడు. 

అప్పుడు చిన్నవాడయిన షణ్ముఖుడు తన వాహనమైన నెమలిని తీసుకొని భూలోకం చుట్టిరావడానికి బయలుదేరుతాడు. 

కానీ పెద్దవాడయిన వినాయకుడు తన తల్లిదండ్రులైన పార్వతీపరమేశ్రుల చుట్లూ మూడుసార్లు ప్రదక్షిణలు చేస్తాడు. ఇలా ప్రదక్షిణలు చేయడంవల్ల సకల నదులలో స్నానం చేసిన పుణ్యం వస్తుందనే సత్యాన్ని తెలుసుకుని, కైలాసంలోనే ప్రదక్షిణలు చేస్తుంటాడు. 

అయితే భూలోకానికి చుట్టిరావడానికి బయలుదేరిన సుబ్రహ్మణ్యుడు ఏ క్షేత్రానికి వెళ్లినా అప్పటికే అక్కడ వినాయకుడు చేరుకుని వెనుతిరిగి వస్తున్నట్లు కనబడుతుంటాడు. ఈ విధంగా వినాయకుడు విఘ్నాలకు అధిపతి అయ్యాడు. 

ఇలా ఓడిపోయిన సుబ్రహ్మణ్యుడు తన తల్లిదండ్రులమీద అలకతో కైలాసం వదిలి, భూలోకంలోకి వచ్చి ఒక కొండ శిఖరం మీద నివాసం వుంటాడు. అప్పుడు శివపార్వతులు ఇద్దరూ షణ్ముఖుని బుజ్జగించడం కోసం భూలోకంలో అతడు వున్న కొండ శిఖరానికి చేరుకుంటారు. అక్కడ పరమశివుడు సుబ్రహ్మణ్యుడిని ఎత్తుకుని ‘‘నువ్వే సకలజ్ఞాన ఫలానివి’’ అని ఊరడిస్తారు. దీంతో ప్రసన్నుడైన సుబ్రహ్మణ్యుడు శాశ్వతంగా ఆ కొండమీదే కొలువు వుంటానని అభయం ఇస్తారు. (సకల జ్ఞాన ఫలంలో (తమిలంలో పలం), నీవు (తమిళంలో నీ) - ఈ రెండూ కలిపి పళని అయ్యింది.) 

విషయాలు:
శ్రీ సుబ్రహ్మణ్యేశ్వరస్వామి వారి క్షేత్రాలలో ప్రఖ్యాతి గాంచిన క్షేత్రం ఈ పళని. ఇది ఎంతో పురాతనమైన క్షేత్రం. క్రీస్తుశకం ఏడవ శతాబ్దంలో కేరళరాజు అయిన చీమన్ పెరామాళ్ దీనిని నిర్మించారు. ఆ తరువాత పాండ్యులు ఈ మందిరాన్ని అభివృద్ధి చేశారు. 

ఇక్కడ పళని మందిరంలోని గర్భగుడిలో వున్న స్వామివారి మూర్తిన నవషాషాణములతో చేయబడింది. ఇటువంటి స్వరూపం మరెక్కడా లేదు. దీనిని సిద్ధభోగార్ అనే మహర్షి చేశారు. తొమ్మిదిరకాల విషపూరిత పదార్థాలతో దీనిని తయారుచేశారు. 

తమిళనాడులో వున్నవాళ్లు ఈయనను ‘‘పళని మురుగా’’ అనే పేరుతో కీర్తిస్తారు. 

ఈయన స్వరూపం చాలావరకు భగవాన్ శ్రీరహణ మహర్షితో కలుస్తుంది. చాలామంది పెద్దలు భగవాన్ రమణులు సుబ్రహ్మణ్య అవతారం అని చెబుతుంటారు. 

ఇది తమిళనాడులోని దిండిగల్ జిల్లాలో, మధురై నుంచి 120 కిలోమీటర్ల దూరంలో వుంది.

Palani Murugan (Kartikeya) temple is very famous among Hindu religion. People come by walk (bare footed) to take darshan of Lord Murugan. Devotees going to Shabarimalai also visit Palani on their way to take blessings of Lord Murugan.

Palani is located in Dindigul district of Tamilnadu state in India. Both Palani hills and Kodaikanal hills are at the backdrop of the Palani temple (South side). Lord Murugan temple is on a small hill.

This hill is called Shivagiri. At the foot hill, there is also one more temple (locals say, it is the main temple) dedicated to Lord Muruga. Beside this temple, Lord Ganesha temple is also located. Before climibing the hill, main pooja is performed here. There will be huge gathering at this place and entry into the steps is a little difficult sometimes.

The main temple is called, Palani Arulmigu Dhandayudhapani temple. The temple hill is surrounded by a circular road (also called Giri (means temple) Veedhi (means road). Here devotees pay their prayers through singing and dancing while making rounds around the temple hill. This road reaches to other places via connecting or bypassing roads.

Various poojas are performed at the temple premesis. Contact the temple management for timings and cost of each puja. The cost of each pooja varies with season (normal and special days). Various types of Archana and Abhishekas are done.

Special darshan tickets can be purchased either at the main area outside the Garbha griham or inside itself while standing in the qeue. Limited people will be allowed at a time from various doors to avoid rush inside.
