గంగ పరమ పవిత్రమైన నది.
ఆ నదిలో స్నానం చేసినంత మాత్రానే అన్ని పాపాలు తొలగి పోతాయన్నది హిందువుల నమ్మకం. అసలు గంగ ఎవరు అన్న దానికి సంబం ధించి అనేక కథలున్నాయి.
ఆమె మేనా, హిమవంతుల పెద్ద కుమార్తె అనీ, పార్వతీ దేవికి సోదరి అనీ
విష్ణుమూర్తి పాదాల నుంచి ఉద్భవించిందని వేర్వేరు కథలు ఉన్నాయి.
విష్ణు పాదోద్భవి అయిన ఆ గంగను
బ్రహ్మ దేవుడు తన కమండలంలోకి తీసుకున్నాడని కథనం.
భగీరథుని వెంట ఆమెను బ్రహ్మ పంపాడనేది ఒక కథ.
ఆ సమయంలో ఆమె తాను భూమి మీదకు రాగలనని అయితే తనను ఆపి తట్టుకోగల శక్తి గల వాడు ఉండాలని చెప్పినట్లుపురాణాలు చెబుతున్నాయి. భగీరథుడు అందుకు సమర్థుడు శివుడని ఎంచి ఆయ నను ప్రసన్నం చేసుకోగా ఆయన అందుకు సిద్ధపడ్డారు.
అలాగ శివుని జటాజూటంలోనికి గంగ
ఉరికి వచ్చింది. శివ స్పర్శతో మరింత పావనమైంది. ఆ గంగలోని ఏడు బిందువులను శివుడు భూమి మీదకు వదిలాడు. ఆ బిందువులు మొదట పడిన చోటు బిందు సరస్సు. అక్కడి నుంచి గంగా నది ప్రవ హిస్తూ దారిలో జహ్ను ముని యజ్ఞశాలను ముంచెత్తింది. దానితో ముని కోపించి మొత్తం నదీ ప్రవాహాన్ని తాగి వేశాడు. అయితే భగీర థుడు ప్రార్థించగా తన చెవి నుంచి విడిచిపెట్టాడు. జహ్ను మహర్షి తాగి విడిచి పెట్టినది కనుక ఆమెకు జాహ్నవి అనే పేరు వచ్చింది.
గంగా నది జహ్నుని చెవి నుంచి బయటకు వచ్చిన రోజు వైశాఖ మాసము అప్పటి నుంచి నిరాటంకంగా ఆమె ప్రవహించింది. కనుక ఆ రోజును
ఆమె జయంతిగా జరుపుకొంటుంటారు.
ఈ జయంతినే జాహ్నవీ జయంతి, గంగా జయంతి అని కూడా అంటారు.
ఈ రోజున గంగా నదిలో స్నానం చేయడం, పూజ నిర్వహించ ఆచారం కూడా ఉన్నాయి.
అలాగే శర్కర సప్తమి, నింబ సప్తమి, అనోదన సప్తమి, ద్వాదశ సప్తమి వ్రతాలు, పర్జన్య పూజ వంటివి చేసే ఆచారం ఉంది. గంగాదేవి మనుష్య రూపంలో భూమి మీద సంచరిండం వంటి కథలూ ఉన్నాయి.
ఒక సారి ఆమె భూమి మీద మనుష్య రూపంలో సంచరిస్తుండగా శంతన మహారాజు చూసి మోహించి వివాహం చేసుకోవడం కూడా జరిగింది. వారికి పుట్టిన పిల్లల్లో ఒకరే మహా భారతంలో ప్రముఖ పాత్ర వహించిన కురు పితామహుడు భీష్ముడు. ఒక గంగా దేవి శివుని భార్య అన్న అపప్రధ కొందరిలో ఉంది.
గంగను శివుడు ధరించాడు కాని ఆమెను వివాహం చేసుకోలేదు.
ఆమె ఆయనకు భార్య కాదు.
మన దేశంలో గంగా నది చాలా దూరం ప్రవహించింది. ఆ నదీ తీరాన ఎన్నో పుణ్య క్షేత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి.
వాటిలో కాశీ ప్రముఖమైనదని
వేరే చెప్పనక్కర్లేదు.
ఇక గంగా, యమునా, అంతర్వాహిని అయిన సరస్వతితో కలిసే సంగమం త్రివేణీ సంగమంగా ప్రసిద్ధం
అది మరో అతి పవిత్రమైన తీర్థ క్షేత్రం.
గంగా నదిని స్తుతిస్తూ ఎన్నో గ్రంథాలు, శ్లోకాలు వెలవడ్డాయి.
ఉత్తుంగ తరంగ అయిన గంగను స్తుతిస్తూ ఆది శంకరులు చేసిన గంగా స్తోత్రం అద్భుతం.
